Dans les romans, s'il s'y trouve un artiste, neuf fois sur dix il s'agit d'un peintre. Et, celui-ci est, au choix, un mystificateur, un raté, un fou, un martyr. À ce sujet, je n'ai pas encore, au fil de mes lectures, trouvé pire traitement que celui infligé à Claude Lantier, héros du roman L'œuvre, par son auteur Émile Zola. Sa vie est un calvaire.

Dans les romans, le peintre rate sa vie et presque toujours, son œuvre. Pour la vie, on n'y peut rien, mais pour l'œuvre? J'ai appelé neuf artistes à la rescousse et leur ai demandé, prenant le parti d'un personnage, de réaliser une œuvre picturale en écho à un roman d'artiste. Il fallait faire en sorte que l'œuvre impossible dans la fiction devienne un tableau possible dans la réalité. Personne n'a choisi Claude Lantier… je pense que la tâche était trop grande pour réparer l'affront dont il fut victime… le pauvre. —MCB

When one finds an artist in a novel, nine times out of ten it’s a painter. And he is -- take your pick -- a hoaxer, a madman, a martyr. In all my reading on the subject, I have yet to find a worse treatment of the figure than that inflicted on Claude Lantier, the hero of the novel L’Oeuvre, by its author Emile Zola. His life is one long agony.

In novels, the painter must ruin his life and, almost invariably, his work. We can do nothing for the life, but for the work? I called nine artists to the rescue and asked them to take on the role of a character and create a pictorial work that would echo an “artist novel.” One had to make an actual picture, in the real world, of one of the impossible artworks in the novel. No one chose Claude Lantier… I think the task of redressing the affront done to him was too great… Poor guy. —MCB
